CNS Vital Signs Testing Keyboard

CNS Vital Sign was developed to be clinician, technician, or patient / subject administered battery of computerized neuropsychological tests. The neurocognitive tests were normed using a standard keyboard. Using a keyboard is important, other neurocognitive test use esoteric hardware devices that become obsolete or are discontinued from manufacturing or touchscreens that can fatigue a respondent. Using the keyboard makes it easier for the subject to respond, providing a closer correlation between task and outcome measure. CNS Vital Signs uses technology that provides the subject a gaming type experience which encourages high subject compliance.

CNS Vital Signs requires the use of just a few keys on the keyboard. The testing session utilizes primarily the ENTER key, to start each test, and the SPACE BAR is the singular response key for most of the tests. The shifting attention test utilizes the two SHIFT keys or the two ARROW keys, and the symbol digit coding test and rating scales utilize the NUMBER keys. The test can be administered with a standard keyboard or a special keyboard (below) available from CNS Vital Signs.

Although not required to run the application, some clinicians and researchers have requested a custom keyboard with the keys "in play" highlighted. CNS Vital Signs keyboard fulfills that need. It is a standard USB keyboard. Clinicians using a laptop to administer the test may want to utilize a separate keyboard to minimize wear and tear on the laptop keyboard.
